Traditional Treatment: Medication and MAT
The National Institute on Drug Abuse has approved a few medication types for the treatment of OUD, and these medications have become common practice in treatment regimens. Buprenorphine (Suboxone®, Subutex®), methadone, and extended-release naltrexone (Vivitrol®), have all been proven effective for the treatment of OUD and have helped make significant strides in the fight against the opioid crisis.
However, to best support successful recovery, it is advised that these medications be combined with behavioral counseling and therapies for a “whole patient” approach, known as Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT). A MAT approach offers the patient the most holistic option to reach successful detoxification and recovery from opioid addiction. MAT programs are extremely effective, but they are not accessible to many OUD patients. Because almost every state lacks sufficient treatment capacity to provide MAT to all patients with OUD1, there is a significant gap in treatment availability and, subsequently, a gap in treatment quality across patients.
