Types of OUD Patients that May Benefit From S.T. Genesis

patient_benefit_st_genesisThe United States has long struggled with Opioid Use Disorders (OUD), and the current opioid crisis sheds light on just how critical of a problem opioid misuse is. Addiction to these types of drugs is difficult to combat as the detox process can be painful, and relapse rates are high.

S.T. Genesis was built to ease this process and can be a successful solution for many types of OUD patients. Our FDA-cleared device has proven effective in supporting the detox process for multiple types of addiction.

Benefitting  Patient Type #1 – High Opioid Abuse Patients

Many patients struggling with opioid abuse have histories of relapse and may have a difficult time completing a successful detox. The use of S.T. Genesis can work to bridge this gap. One case study observed a 37-year-old woman who experienced anxiety, abdominal cramping, and vomiting as a result of heroin addiction withdrawal. As part of her two previous treatments, she was prescribed buprenorphine in her recovery program – first for 4mg, then titrated to 16mg, to reduce her opioid dependence. Both instances worked only for a few days before cravings returned, and relapse occurred.

When examined again by a physician, her Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Score (COWS) was a 38, indicating severe withdrawal symptoms. Her physician determined that a Percutaneous Electrical Neural Field Stimulators (PNFS), such as S.T. Genesis, would help treat her withdrawal symptoms.

Although the PNFS device is not a cure, it serves as a bridge from successful detox to complete recovery. S.T. Genesis can support patients in this high addiction, high likelihood of relapse situation to help increase their chance of successful treatment.

Benefitting Patient Type #2 – Treatment-Related Opioid Addicts

It is not always an abuse of opioids that leads to OUD. Sometimes overuse can cause it as well. Opioid Use Disorder can stem from improper diagnosis of opioids for pain relief as part of a treatment regimen. Patients who are prescribed opioids in this way can easily become dependent if their dosage is not carefully monitored to avoid overuse.

If a patient does become dependent on opioids, S.T. Genesis has proven to help. One case study observed a 58-year-old man who entered a substance abuse treatment program with tremors, joint pain, and stomach cramps. He was prescribed opioids for the treatment of stage 2 prostate cancer and had his dosage titrated to resolve his growing dependence. When he stopped taking the medication, his withdrawal symptoms were severe.

When tested by a physician, his COWS score of 22 indicated moderate withdrawal symptoms that could be eased with S.T. Genesis. Unlike other traditional approaches, the PNFS device provides increased treatment compliance for the patient, decreases healthcare costs for the treatment center, and improves the outcome for this patient seeking treatment.
